Questions

if I use a scene from Google Street View, and then create a line illustration by hand - so that "looks like a drawing" - what are my responsibilities?

The following illustration is an example of what I am talking about: The original photo of a girl (not my property) http://eastcoastbands.com/gaeorig.jpg And then the illustration I made: http://eastcoastbands.com/gae.png So this example uses a person. In practice I will be doing this using buildings and Google Street View.

It is likely that google copyrights its images and that your work would be considered a derivative, which is infringement. You might argue fair use or that it's not copyrightable because it's not creative enough, but that is likely a losing argument. Try getting your own non-infringing photos.
