I've seen this chart (http://www.lumapartners.com/lumascapes/display-ad-tech-lumascape/) but it doesn't make a lot of sense to someone completely new to the industry.

While display ads are used as an umbrella term to include all ads that users see online. This is done to make the message more easily consumable by the users of that platform. Native ads appear in-feed and are non-disruptive, like suggested posts on Facebook or promoted posts on Twitter. Native ads are non-intrusive and so are not affected by banner blindness, however, if the goal of your campaign is to increase brand awareness, retarget lost customers, or customer acquisition then creating a display advertising campaign is the right way to go. When optimized properly and targeted at the right audience, display ad spend marketers multiple advertising opportunities, this is why display ad spend in the US reached $41. Creating optimized display ads is crucial for your display advertising campaign success.
