This was shared with me by app developers that hired me to help them promote their iTunes and Android apps: "Admob gets you the most downloads". I am not surprised because Admob (http://www.admob.com) is actually Google.

Why Admob is so good:
They provide detailed instructions:
on how to create, run and pause campaigns
bids, budget, and funding
reporting and tracking

Do not neglect to promote the app in social media: Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, etc. Of course, there are a lot of great social media sites, but I personally saw the best results on the 4 sites I mentioned.

One thing to remember: social media promotions work perfectly and deliver good results but... it takes time. That's why you need to keep at it again, again and again.

There are certain techniques that deliver great results, not just good.

Now go get tons of downloads. Best of luck!

Great question! I think the best way to promote an app is with a well-rounded campaign that combines a variety of marketing channels and tactics. That way, every piece of the puzzle works together to get more visibility and better results than any one could alone.

That said, there are some channels that tend to work better, especially if you're starting out. Facebook advertising is great because it's self-serve and you can target your ads. There are many mobile ad networks depending on your budget and goals - AdMob, Millennial Media, RevMob, TapJoy, ChartBoost for games - I think the most important thing is to target your ads as much as you can and carefully test / measure.

Would be glad to explain more on a call - there are lots of great ways to promote your app.

As November 2017:

Ad Networks:
We see the Apple Search Ads being quite good, Facebook is the standard for getting high quality downloads. For Admob and other networks, you need to know them very well to drive quality downloads for good prices.

App Store Optimisation:

We have seen Apple doing big changes this year, making it more difficult for newcomers; while giving established apps more reach. It will be interesting to see how this evolves. For sure there will be many opportunities here. I would be happy to chat with you about this topic with you in a call.
