How Can I Find an Online Marketing Expert to Join Our Company?

We've successfully bootstrapped a technology focused subscription / SaaS site to have 10,000+ paying members. We did it without any marketing specialist but not having one obviously hinders our growth potential. We want to hire a full time online marketing lead / expert but have no idea where to start. Are there specialist job boards or better places to look?

The first place to start is to get out there and meet people especially at local business association group meetings. Any place where people are networking is a great way to find someone for the team. Use the resources you already have like checking your college or university alumni association. Of course you could put out an ad on one of the online job boards, but your best opportunity will be to find someone who knows someone so that you can get a strong recommendation. There's always the obvious resources such as LinkedIn, but you'd be better off networking with people that you know to find the exact person that you need.

First, congratulations on your success!

When I work with clients who are looking to bringing a new team member, we begin with a clear identification of the corporate mission, the position role, and its responsibilities. Only when you have clarified your corporate culture and the role this individual will play in that culture can you find a good fit with both the personality type and the skill set you require. Then you can either reach out to your existing team with the full description - you never know who your team knows - post the position on your web site (and even to your list - you never know who your clients know), or bring in a retained search firm to find exactly the right fit for you and your company.

On the other hand, are you sure you need a full time employee? Often an outsourced marketing company or agency can bring far broader and deeper expertise to the table than a single employee, at the same or lower cost to you. Just a thought.

If you'd like help in clarifying your description or have any follow-up questions, I'm happy to help.

Indeed.com is a great resource. Not only can you post jobs, but you can also search resumes. Indeed.com is a employment-related meta-search engine for job listings, and is currently available in over 50 countries and 28 languages. In 2010, Indeed surpassed Monster.com to become the most visited job site in the United States. Also, Indeed.com is one of the most trafficked employment websites in the United States as ranked by Alexa. As of March 2014, Indeed reaches over 140 million unique visitors every month. Indeed.com aggregates job listings from thousands of websites, including job boards, staffing firms, associations, and company career pages. So you can either post a job, or just use keywords to search other people near your zip code.

Also, you can use LinkedIn.com to search for candidates using 'key words' to search their background. LinkedIN.com is a business-oriented social networking service. As of June 2013, LinkedIn reports more than 259 million users in more than 200 countries. As of 2 July 2013, Quantcast reports LinkedIn has 65.6 million monthly unique U.S. visitors and 178.4 million globally. You can post a job on LinkedIn, or search for candidates.

I'm a big believer in leveraging your connections though. The best hires I've made came from referrals. Check LinkedIn for connections and introductions or use Clarity to call connected folks and pick their brain!

Ask a LinkedIn specialist who can give you targeted profiles for almost nothing and you can reach out to them for further discussion.

You can think of a great digital marketing expert as a conductor in an orchestra, and Website, SEO, SEM, PPC, Email, and Social Media are all essential but different instruments in the orchestra.

Therefore, a digital marketing expert is very different from an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) expert, Website designer/builder, Social media expert, or someone that specializes in PPC (Pay-per-click) advertising. While there is some overlap, these types of experts should not drive your high-level strategy. For example, an SEO expert should not drive your website strategy, because you may end up with a website that ranks high in Google but does not align with your other business or customer goals.

A great digital marketing expert will plan and oversee all digital channels for your business because your website, content marketing, social media, email marketing, SEO, and PPC efforts have to align with the overall strategy. For example, if you are trying to position your product or service as a premium offering, you cannot offer deep discounts on Facebook (Ads), and at the same time promote exclusivity on another channel (e.g. Website). Therefore most companies have a marketing manager, a chief marketing officer, or digital marketing consultant overseeing all marketing campaigns and channels. Therefore, a great digital marketing expert (or consultant) has to have experience in customer and market research, strategy, planning, execution (different digital marketing channels), optimization, and also have the ability to communicate up, down and across the organization.
You can even talk to these marketing experts and ask them if they have any references that may be suitable for your company: https://www.lindseya.com/top-50-digital-marketing-experts/
